Global Construction Robotic Day | HKCRC Builds a Brigde Between Academic Institution and the Construction Industry

On 7 and 8 May 2024Global Construction Robotic Day organized by  the Construction Industry Council (CIC) was held at Hong Kong Science Park, gathering nearly 30 construction technology exhibitors from Hong Kong, the Mainland and internationally. The two-day event included three expert seminars and a two-day robot exhibition.

In the "Pioneering Trend in Construction Robotic” Conference on the 7th, on behalf of HKCRC, Roberto Horowitz, HKCRC Visiting ProfessorProfessor of Berkeley, California, gave a speech on the topic of "From Labs to Startups: A New Model of Construction Innovation". He took the change history of 3126 Labs of HKUST in new engineering education as an example to show the crowd an emerging engineering eco-system. At the same time, under the construction of open and resource interoperability of science and innovation platform, it is needed to encourage and promote more achievements of science and innovation to be gradually marketized and transformed into real technological changes for various industries.

For the current construction industry, introducing construction automation, digitalization and other technologies into realistic construction scenarios is an important measure. It directly addresses the industry's pain points, which can reduce accident and casualty rates, alleviate labor shortages, promote low carbon and environmental protection, and promote safe and efficient construction, as well as a gradual and progressive change to the construction industry.

In this regard, HKCRC, through its young team strength and pioneering R&D perspectives, continues to deliver adaptable and innovative construction technology achievements, including key projects such as smart design, IoT solutions,  construction robots, and intelligent machinery and equipment.

At the  “Construction Robotic In Action” Conference  in the afternoon of the same day, Mr. Victor TAI, Under Secy for Housing, mentioned that in order to meet the challenges of the construction industry, the Housing Bureau and the HKCRC have signed a MoU to establish a strategic partnership, aiming to sharing resources and jointly promoting the construction of Hong Kong's public housing.

Moreover, HKCRC has already established close cooperation with CIC and a number of construction companies, striving to build a bridge of interoperability between academic institutions and the construction industry.

On the event, HKCRC also exhibited three construction technology achievements, including rebar tying robot, high-precision ground grinding robot, and IoT smart flatness meter, which attracted a lot of attention. HKCRC staff enthusiastically introduced the product functions, application scenarios and other aspects to the attending guests, such as government officials, construction industry experts and other guests.

In the future, HKCRC will continue to consolidate the existing technology research and development foundation, increase innovation, deeply explore the current situation of the construction market, and use the power of science and innovation to bring deeper power to the construction industry.
